I want to upgrade to a new operating system, is there anything I need to do BEFOREHAND to ensure my service will work correctly?

YES! There are definitely some steps you should take BEFORE you upgrade. Always check out the website for the manufacturer of the operating system and your modem. For example, if you are upgrading to Windows 2000, and have a 3COM modem, you should go to the Microsoft website and the 3 COM website. Sometimes, you will find that you need to download some new software drivers in order for your service to operate correctly. If you get into the situation where you upgrade and your service does not work, this may have been the case, and you will waste a lot of time reinstalling the old system just to get the drivers. We have had a few issues with Windows 2000 and ME that were caused because the new drivers had not been downloaded first. IF you have a 3COM modem, this especially applies to you.

What is DSL?

DSL stands for “Digital Subscriber Line”. DSL is a technology that utilizes your existing copper phone lines to provide a high-speed Internet connection. Smithville utilizes a technology called ADSL. The ‘A’ in ADSL stands for Asymmetric. This refers to the upload and download speeds you will be able to access. In our case the download speed is faster than the upload speed; this make the connection asymmetric. (one is greater than the other)

Can I use my new DSL line to make phone calls?

DSL is a feature that is added to an existing phone line. It does not supply you with an additional phone line that you can talk on. You can, however, talk on your existing line and surf the web at the same time

Does DSL affect the quality of my phone service?

NO! DSL is a feature that is added to your existing telephone line. The voice signals and the data signals share the line and are separated by a “splitter” that is installed either in the telephone interface at your location or through micro filters on all your phones. You can make calls or send faxes while surfing the Web. Your phone reception will remain as crisp and clear as ever.
